voz en círculo

2023

Hyde Park Art Center, Chicago, IL

This performance was devised in collaboration with Sofía Fernandez Diaz's installation “círculo," which features hundreds of suspended wool fibers tethering beeswax spheres. As I explore the installation by flashlight, I become an element within its ecosystem, responding to and animating the materials with my breath and voice. I allow myself to be guided by the environment as if reading a musical score. My vocalizations are picked up by a contact microphone taped to my throat that functions as my own tether, mimicking the materials around me. My vocal performance is improvised and builds through live looping into a choral landscape. Eventually, I hand my flashlights to audience members as an invitation to illuminate me, which allows for my shadow to interact with that of the installation. By releasing my control of the image to others present, I gesture to the interconnected nature of existence represented within this installation.
